iPhone threading sample code

To go along with my lecture on performance in CS193P on Tuesday, I posted some sample code for working with threads in iPhone applications.

If you have the iPhone SDK installed, you can download and run LetsMakeAThread (much respect to Douglas Adams) and ThreadedFlickrTableView.

If you aren’t an iPhone development nerd… we now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

The good: Android has background applications and copy & paste.

The bad: They haven’t done it in a way that many people will be able to discover and use easily. Note how the narrator likes to say “simply” before describing some non-obvious input sequence.

My new Drobo

After a few months of hearing Tom’s sales pitch, I bit the bullet and bought a Drobo. My photo and video libraries had long since outgrown my MacBook Pro’s hard drive, so I had been storing them on an external hard drive without a backup. Totally not cool.

The Drobo has room for four hard drives, which it uses to safely store your files so that if a hard drive goes up in smoke, you don’t lose anything. And it doesn’t require any configuration.

So, now I’ve got a sweet second-generation Drobo with a couple of 500GB hard drives in it. I’m digging it so far- it’s blazing fast over FireWire 800, it’s quiet, and it looks really nice in my living room. Three for three, if you’re scoring at home. I’ve begun using it for my Time Machine backups as well, so I’m probably going to sell my Time Capsule. Kudos to the folks at Drobo, I like being pleasantly surprised.
